Rules and Ethics

Standards and Guidelines for Driftwood Martial Arts

Code of Ethics

Our code of ethics establishes the moral and ethical standards that guide our training, teaching, and interactions both on and off the mat. These principles reflect the values and traditions of martial arts.

Training with another person requires respect. At no time is anyone forced to train with any individual they do not wish to train with. Treating training partners poorly may result in you not having anyone to train with. Treat your partners the way you wish to be treated.

Conversations about politics and religion are not fight school subject matter. Please keep your attention on why you are here and stick to the training. Most individuals who train in martial arts do not come for the conversation.

While we do not require any bowing on or off the mat, be warned that stepping on the mat commits you to whatever is going on at the time on the mat. Do not step on the mat if you are not fight ready. If you are unsure if you should step on the mat, please stand next to the mat, until an instructor calls on you.

Age, size, strength, speed and ability will vary, but the amount of respect for the safety of others does not change. Keep it safe at all times.

Instructors are here to help everyone grow their knowledge and abilities. Please respect everyone by not giving advice to others that you are not qualified to give. Nothing says "I don't know what I am talking about" more than a white belt giving training tips.

Please conduct yourself at all times in a professional and respectful manner.

Student Responsibilities

All students have responsibilities that extend beyond just attending classes. These responsibilities help maintain the quality and integrity of our training environment.

All students are required to arrive clean and odor-free, in clean attire. We understand that you will sweat and possibly even smell after training, but anyone found to be in dirty attire or of poor hygiene before training begins will be required to leave the property. Personal hygiene is critical to an inviting and pleasing training environment.

1. Finger and toe nails need to be trimmed and filed at all times. Breath and body odor should be fresh and non-offensive. It is highly recommended that you arrive freshly showered.

2. Clean attire for the training session type is required. Visibly dirty or stained training attire is not permitted. Please wear clean and fresh-smelling gear. While we do not require you to wear any gear purchased from us, we do expect you to wear the proper gear at all times. Wearing our branded gear or patches is never required, but much appreciated.

Minimum attire includes a T-shirt and boxer shorts with underwear. No exposed chests or thongs, for males or females. Spats and rash guards are advised. If your junk is exposed and offensive, you may be asked to cover it with shorts or a shirt.

Classes designated GI require the minimum attire as well as regulation BJJ kimono and belt. Shorts not reuired.

Classes designated as No GI require the minimum as stated.

Classes designated MMA require the minimum as stated, as well as protective headgear, at minimum 7oz MMA gloves, shin guards and a mouth guard.

Classes designated self-defense require the minimum as stated.

3. All students and guests are required to sign a release of liability waiver. This must be re-signed every twelve months.

4. All students and guests under age 18 must be accompanied by their legal parent or guardian.

5. Stow your gear in a safe manner so that others are not burdened by it.

6. Remove your shoes as soon as you enter the facility. No street shoes on floor or the mat. Wrestling shoes are permitted both on the floors and the mat if they have not come in contact with the outdoors.

7. Weight training equipment is for members only.

8. No training with an open wound, bacterial or fungal infections (covered or uncovered), or any illnesses. Be safe and stay home if you have a health issue. Intentionally spreading infection in the school is grounds for immediate removal and possible ban.

9. Verbal and physical bullying are not permitted. Please report bullying to an instructor immediately. Good training partners take care of each other.

10. Listen to your instructors. If you are given a command to stop something or leave the facility, consider this compulsory. Failure to comply with an instructor may result in a permanent ban.

11. There is a maximum of two (2) guests per active member permitted at any one time. Responsibility for the actions of a guest falls directly on the active member. Guests may train with the active member for a single class, providing they have the proper attire and gear if required. After one free training session, guests must pay a drop-in fee to train. All guests must sign the liability waiver. Failure to do so can result in a ban of the active member who accompanied them.

12. Access to food and drink inside the facility is a luxury and not a right. Abuse it and lose it.

13. All students must help keep the facility clean. Students pay for instruction and access to train, not laundry or janitorial services. After each training session, you are required to help mop the mat and pick up any trash. If you brought it in, pack it out.

14. While we encourage conversation, please do not speak while an instructor is addressing the class. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and receive answers. While there are no stupid questions, please try to keep your questions on topic.

Safety is our top concern. Please help us maintain a clean, healthy and safe training environment.

We humbly request that everyone who trained greet and thank each of their taining partners at class end. Doing so is a sign of respect and professional courtecy.

Disciplinary Procedures

This section outlines the procedures and consequences for violations of school rules or ethical standards. Our approach emphasizes education, growth, and maintaining a positive training environment.

At all times, students and their guests are required to follow all rules and guidelines. Failure to do so may result in the offending party being removed from the property. Multiple cases of a student or their guest being removed for a violation, will result in a permanent ban, without any recourse.
